2008 Gallery

November 28, 2008 - Sorry for the lack of updates.  I have been very busy scanning slides and dealing with other sites that I maintain.  Here are a few post Thanksgiving photos.  First we see NS 287 about to cross Vine Street in St. Bernard with a load of new Ford products.  Then we see former CIND 2252, now Southern Appalachian Museum 2608 (its original Southern Railway number) and recently overhauled CIND GP50's at I&O's McCullough Yard in Norwood.

July 27, 2008 - The Cincinnati Southern Railway Trustees Special arrived back in town almost two hours ahead of schedule on Sunday afternoon.  Here are some photos of the train at Mason, Walton, Bromley as seen from Mt. Echo Park, and at Gest Street Yard as seen from Price Hill.  Later that evening, there was a fireworks display at Cincinnati Union Terminal, as viewed from my home in Fairview Heights.

July 25, 2008 - Norfolk Southern operated an inspection special on behalf of the trustees of the Cincinnati Southern Railway today from Cincinnati to Chattanooga.  We see the train at Erlanger.  Later in the day, we see NS TQ07 at Redbank and then at the former PRR passenger station in Norwood.  Last, we take a quick peek at the CSX Queensgate Yard engine pit off Beekman Street.

July 14, 2008 - We start off with some photos from Saturday of the NS train 61A derailment site between Frogtown Road and Maher Road in Richwood, Kentucky on the NS 1st District CNO&TP.  A ballast train is dropping its commodity to help get the track back up to specs.  After that, we see a few NS trains around Walton and a CSX train near Sparta and Sanders, Kentucky.  Fast forward to Monday evening at MD Cabin on the CSX Ohio River Bridge and we see first Q539, then Q541 approaching the main span over the river.

June 27, 2008 - Here are a few photos from around town this week.  First we see CSX Q231 at CT Junction on Wednesday, then CSX 5500 "Spirit of Cincinnati on Q365, then some lousy weather on Thursday, but making for some interesting photos.  Check out the second unit on train T200-20 at Latonia.  Friday, NS #100, a RP20BD GenSet locomotive built by NRE, passed through town and is seen at Hopple Street.

May 22, 2008 - Another day out and about after work.  I caught CSX Y222 leaving Cognis at Elmwood Place, then paced alongside NS 25A on Spring Grove Avenue as it approached NA Tower with a SD70M-2 leading.

May 21, 2008 - Some photos taken after a day at work.  We see NS 117 and 144 at Fort Mitchell, taken from the Home Depot parking lot.  Then we move across the river and see NS 25A approaching NA Tower at Beech Street in St. Bernard and NS 264 with BNSF power at Township Avenue in Elmwood Place.

May 10, 2008 - A few shots from around town today.  First we see some trains on the NS Dayton District between 78th Street and NA Tower.  Included is a composite of 3 images showing Whiskey Hill between 66th Street and 78th Street.  Then we see an I&O train at Amberley Village.

May 5, 2008 - The NS business train visited town on it's way home from the Kentucky Derby.  Here are a few shots from the chase between Louisville and Cincinnati via Danville.

April 6, 2008 - Sorry for the lack of updates, but work has been keeping me indoors.  Below are photos from around the area taken on April 6, including a shot of the CSX derailment at 8th Street at the south end of Queensgate Yard.  Afterwards, we see trains at Winton Place, Hopple Street, Rosedale, Grants Tunnels, Walton, Bank Lick, and Verona.

March 8 & 9, 2008 - BLIZZARD!  Eleven inches of snowfall (give or take a few inches) in the area resulted in some good snow photography, but lousy operating conditions for the railroads.  Below we see a collection of photos after the storm.  Of particular note, check out the CSX jet snow blower clearing switches at Queensgate Yard.  We also see a view of two NS trains at Ludlow as viewed from Mt. Echo Park in East Price Hill.  The park offers some spectacular vistas, particularly of NS' Erlanger Hill.

March 2, 2008 - I ventured over to Newport today to catch a coal train that was parked behind Bobby Mackey's on the Wilder Main.  The outbound crew was aboard, so I went to NX Cabin to catch him grind up the hill to the C&O connection.  I was a bit startled when I spotted a fellow sleeping under a tank car.  Newport Police soon transported him to better sleeping quarters.  We see N644-28 pulling the hill up to NX in the next shot.  After that, I ventured over to the NS Dayton District and took some pictures of the fallen signals at Elmwood Place.  Shortly after, I caught an I&O train at Amberley Village complete with four deer running in front of the train.

March 1, 2008 - It started promisingly with some sun, but ended up as another cloudy day.  At least there were interesting things to see such as a pair of NYS&W bumblebees at NA Tower, new UP SD70ACe's on a NS grain train at Winton Place, CSX Q365 with a pair of new ES44AH's, and Q559 with M1 tanks freshly overhauled from the Lima Tank Plant.

February 25, 2008 - Circus Train!  The Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey circus train arrived in Cincinnati from Knoxville this evening on CSX rails.  Heavy rain began to fall as we see the train from the Amtrak platform at Cincinnati Union Terminal as the train was run onto the CSX intermodal ramp for interchange with the I&O, who will take it to be unloaded at the Cincinnati Coliseum.  With the exception of the animal cars which will be stored at the Boathouse, the train will be kept at the old PRR Undercliff Yard.

February 16, 2008 - A surprisingly bright and sunny Saturday netted some fine photos.  NS provided the big show today with some CN power on their trains.  We start with a NS train on CSX trackage at Elmwood Place, then catch NS T51 at Amberley Village.  After that it is off to Hamilton to catch both NS and CSX trains.  After Hamilton, we head back to Cincinnati in pursuit of some of the CN power.

February 10, 2008 - Another perfect day for photography presented itself and the railroads obliged with some interesting traffic, highlighted by CSX Q241-10 with a new BNSF GE ES44AC.

February 9, 2008 - A bright object in the sky appeared today, though vaguely familiar, it had not been seen recently.  Thus, some decent photos were able to be taken.  First I shot a few on the NS at 78th Street in Carthage, then caught a pair of CSX trains at CT Junction.  A bit later, a grain train from the Indianapolis Sub is seen southbound at Wyoming, followed by Y127 at Chickering Road in Ivorydale, lastly a NS train on the Ohio River Bridge.

February 5, 2008 - Lousy weather = perfect time to see what the camera can do under adverse conditions.  After getting off work, there was about an hour of what some would call "light" left.  I took a few shots of the signals at CT Junction, the Gest Street overpass near DI Tower, and lastly at Union Terminal.  Every shot is handheld!  No tripod here!  The CUT shots were taken at an ISO of 1600 while the others were at 3200.

February 3, 2008 - Another day out with the new digital camera, this time under cloudy skies.  First we follow CSX Q573 west on the Indiana Subdivision, then jaunt over to Winton Place for a few trains.

February 2, 2008 - First day out with the new Nikon D300.  The glass is a Nikkor 18-200mm VR f/3.5-5.6 lens.  Let's head downtown to CT Junction and see what this thing can do.  I also made a quick run over to the NS and caught a local heading up the hill to Erlanger.
